A while back I posted a script that generates a histogram chart from a set of categories in my DAM software. I recently augmented that script to also show the total disk space occupied by the files tagged with those categories.
The newly minted script shows the count of files tagged with the categories as a column chart, and overlays on top of that a X-Y scatter plot of the file sizes in MB. I did this to analyze the composition of my photo collection by file types, hence the screenshot below shows what the resulting chart generated from the sub-categories under the “File Formats” category looks like. Not surprisingly, the vast bulk of my photo collection consists of JPEG files, followed by RAW camera files, even though both occupy about the same amount of disk space. I could have mined this data further to sub-divide the major file types amongst the originating camera models, but this was not relevant for my needs at the time.
